Vegetarian/Meat-Free Hamburgers

Hello everybody!!! How are you guys doing today??

New blog and new recipe!! Are you ready for it?

I am very excited for this new post because I believe is such a good idea! Not only because it’s a meat-free recipe, which is supposed to be healthier and suitable for different types of eaters, but also because it’s super tasty and easy to do. I think I’m quitting regular hamburgers after this! Won’t miss them at all! Let me know what you guys think after reading this!

Anyway, let’s get started!

Ingredients (4-5 people):

  • 300-400 g. of lentils
  • 1/2 onion
  • 2 carrots
  • 100 g. of mushrooms
  • 4-5 spoons of flour
  • Olive oil
  • Salt
  • Potatoes and spices (optional)
  • Hamburger bread
  • Cheese (optional)
  • Avocado (optional)
  • Tomato (optional)
  • Lettuce (optional)
  • Ketchup and mayonnaise (optional)

First thing you wanna do is cooking your lentils. If you have a pressure cooker this will only take you five minutes or less so no excuses! Just put them inside your cooker, pour some water until it covers all the lentils, add some salt, close the lid and cook them for 3-5 min. As simple as that and they are ready!

In a regular pot this will take you a little bit longer, but you just need to check it and stop it when they are soft enough (usually they will start opening up when this happens).

If you want to, you can keep the lentils in some water for a few hours before cooking them and this will make them be softer. But don’t worry if you don’t have enough time or you forgot about it. You can still do it directly as I told you above.

Separately, you want to chop the onion, carrots and mushrooms in little pieces because we are going to cook them slowly in a frying pan to make them softer and give them the perfect texture for the hamburger. So go ahead and add a little bit of olive oil in a frying pan and when it is hot add, firstly the onion, leave it for a few minutes, add the carrots and then the mushrooms until they lose their moisture and are very soft and browny.

Once the veggies are ready, you are going to mix them all together with the lentils. You can use your hands for this step. It will make it easier. After mixing it a little bit, go ahead and take the flour and blend it with the lentils and the veggies until it looks similar to the mixture you can see in the picture bellow.

Put it in the fridge for at least half an hour so that it acquires a more suitable consistency for the next step which will be shaping it into our hamburgers.

During these 30 minutes, I don’t want you to be bored so I have an interesting suggestion to kill that time: oil-free “fries”. Always the perfect side for a good hamburger.

What I did was cooking some potatoes for 3-4 minutes in the microwave and then, once they had cooled down a bit, I cut them into wedges as you’ll see in the next photograph and coated them with some olive oil. Then, in a small plastic bag I put some flour, salt, garlic powder, some spices and I put the potato wedges inside of it. After that, I closed the bag and shook it all together carefully.

Then, one by one, I take them out and put them in a baking sheet and cooked them in the oven for 30-40 min.

Potential potato wedges

Be careful to shake off all the excess of flour properly before putting them in the oven. Otherwise, they’ll have a chunky appearance and a floury taste, which is not very nice. (yeah, I had this problem with some of them, I admit it haha)

Potatoes are  in the oven! It’s time to take the lentils mixture out of the fridge. Again, wash your hands because we are going to use our hands for this.

Take a small amount of the mixture with your hands and smash it a bit until you obtain a proper hamburger shape. Then leave it in a different plate and do the same with the rest of the mixture. You’ll probably need to clean your hands after this again but I think it’s kind of fun and children can help if they are around and they’ll have a good time as well.

All is left to do is frying the hamburgers with some olive oil and there you go! Your first meat-free/vegetarian hamburgers are finished!

However, you may want to toast some hamburger bread and slice some avocado, tomato, cheese or/and lettuce to make it look like a “real” hamburger haha but that’s up to you of course! You can leave it like this for example:

Or put everything inside as I did of course:

Everything was absolutely delicious! I’d never thought a vegetarian hamburger could be as tasty as this one was. Now I am a renovated person haha

On top of that, my parents and my aunt had the chance to try it at the same as I did and they were absolutely delighted as well so please, please! Give it a go at this wonderful thing! Look at it, come on! It looks gorgeous!! haha

Oh yeah baby!! That’s what it looked like once you’d cut it right through the middle! If you’re mouth is not watering after this baby, you have a problem haha.

And what comes next?? Can you guess??

Yes!! You got it!! Eat eat eat!ahah and enjoy!haha

That’s it for today’s recipe. I really hope you guys enjoyed it and that you had a good time reading it. At least that’s what I always intend to do!

Have a nice day!
