I’m sure many of you already know what Quinoa is, or at least you’ve heard about it before. However, I’m also quite sure there are plenty of you who’ve never heard of it before and I wanted to show you how amazing this superfood is and how easy it is to make your diet a little bit healthier just by adding it to some of your everyday dishes.
Quinoa: what is it?
Even though technically it is the seed of a plant called Chenopodium quinoa, it is considered to be a wholemeal grain. It’s rich in proteins, iron and magnesium and many other different minerals and vitamins as well. It’s is quite popular at the moment and widely used nowadays, specially by people who have a plant-based diet because of its composition and its properties.
You can also find it in many different varieties and colors: white, red and black. Imagine combining them all together. It can make your plate look really nice and colourful, and, you should know this by now: “the more colourful your food is, the healthier it will be”.
How do I cook it?
Quinoa might be estrange or unfamiliar to some of you, and therefore it might look difficult to cook as well. However, against all these thoughts, this grain is quite easy to cook. You just need to follow exactly the same steps used to cook rice.
There’s just a slightly different thing you need to bear in mind: you need to rinse your quinoa right before you are going to pour it into your pot. After that, easy; you just need to pour the same volumen of water over your quinoa and bring it to a boil. Right in that moment, turn your heat down to medium and let it boil for 15 minutes. Just remember you need to stir it every 2 or 3 minutes so that it doesn’t stick to the bottom of your pot.
You’ll know it’s ready when it turns almost transparent but it’s still al dente. It should look similar to what you can see in the pic above (in case you chose white quinoa, of course).
What can I eat it with?
Quinoa is more than just a super healthy wholemeal grain than will make your diet much more balanced and rich in vitamins and minerals. It’s also a very versatile ingredient that you will find very easy to combine with your favorite dishes.
You can have it cold or warm, as a side or as main dish…You are gonna love it once you get the hang of it! However, till this happens, here you have some ideas that I’m personally in love with!
I don’t know about you, but I find it very hard to eat warm during the summer. You’ll get that feeling specially if you live in Madrid because it’s so hot every eingle day that just turning the cooker on feels like a terrible ordeal. Having said that, you’ll agree with me that salads are the quickest and fresher option and quinoa matches perfectly with your salads, however it is you like them.
On top of that, it will make your salad crunchier and more filling because by being a wholemeal grain it will keep you full for a longer time than a regular salad. That’s great isn’t it??
Quinoa and salmon
If you are feeling brave enough to turn on that heat, then you can go ahead and try this spectacular combination: quinoa and salmon.
What I like to do is softly cooking some zucchini and then adding the quinoa during the last two minutes just to mix it all together. Then you can griddle or bake your salmon and your quinoa will the perfect side for it. You can be sure of that!!
It’s absolutely delicious, healthy and not too filling, in case you are looking for a light dinner or meal option.
I hope you guys liked this post and that you find it useful for your everyday meals. I really like to help you guys being more healthy and feeling better with yourselves while you still keep eating deliciously.
Thank you very much!!Have fun and eat loads!!! 😉
